18/10/2012 - Paris, Cité de la musique - Paul Meyer, Michel Portal (clarinets)
There are certain instruments, such as the clarinet, which I have always had a close connection with, often for biographical reasons.
When Paul Meyer asked me to write for him and for Michel Portal, I did not hesitate for a second. I have known Paul for a long time, and we have worked together several times. As for Michel Portal, I heard him perform at a very young age at a jazz concert, and it was the first time I ever heard a "slap tongue" on the clarinet.
P.M./M.P. is a combination of 3 moments. For the first, I decided to refer to Assonance for solo clarinet that I wrote in 1982/1983. First of all, because Paul recorded that piece, and then because at that time precisely, the idea of using the "slap" was linked to my memory of Michel PortaI's concert.
