Born on the 19h of October 1955, the French performer, composer, arranger and improviser Roland Dyens began to study the guitar when he was nine years old. Later he studied with the Spanish master Alberto Ponce in a class where he obtained, in 1976, the "Licence de Concert" from l'Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris (France).
In parallel whith his studies as an instrumentalist, Roland Dyens also pursued conducting with equal enthusiasm, studying with the French composer and conductor Désiré Dondeyne (composition and orchestration) and he received a first Prize in harmony, counterpoint and analysis. Among the awards that he received in th early stages of his career are the Special Prize of the International Competition of Alessandria (ltaly) and the Grand Prize of the Charles-Cros Academia (for his recording "Hommage à Villa-Lobos"). A laureate of the Menuhin foundation, in 1988 he was classed among the 100 best contemporary guitarists of ail styles by the french magazine Guitarist.
Today, his compositions and arrangements are performed around the world to unanimous praise and enthusiasm. Truly, his work sheds new light on the possibilities of the guitar. Because of his unique talent and the originality of his music, Roland Dyens must be considered one of the most innovative and complete musicians of our time.
Roland Dyens taught at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.
He died on October 29th, 2016.
