13/07/2003 - Florence - Orchestre des Jeunes et de la Méditerranée, Roland Hayrabedian (conductor)
In response to the commission by the Orchestre des Jeunes et de la Méditerranée on the theme of Algeria, I decided to write this piece in honour of Kateb Yacine, the great Algerian poet and dramaturge, borrowing the title of his main work.
In fact Kateb's entire work is haunted by the figure of Nedjma, who is by turns an inaccessible, wild, even ghostly woman who subsequently becomes a "flower of the dust". Nedjma, which means "star", is the starred banner, like the Algerian flag.
Kateb Yacine superimposes the image of the woman on that of her country by means of a quest for absolute love, similar to a mystic quest.
I have tried to use my music to prolong this tragic and powerfully dreamlike universe.
