Excerpt

19/03/2002 - Poitiers (France) - Orchestre de Poitou-Charentes, Choeur de la Vienne, Peter Csaba (conductor)

Alio means "elsewhere" in Latin, a word that summarises the essential idea behind this piece. By playing on timbres and the extraordinary potential of the instruments of the orchestra I have in fact tried to evoke this "elsewhere", this other world inhabited, perhaps, by those who have already left us. This desire to learn in some way what is beyond our understanding has become an obsession that underlies my music like some unceasing wave. And this piece does indeed evolve like an undertow, moving from the static to the extremely active, before dying out in quiet calm, following a series of ruptures.

Edith Canat de Chizy

The composer mentions that Alio (Latin for elsewhere) was composed in a period when she was working on the idea of movement. This can be discerned especially in her works for strings, among which her third string trio Moving (2001) is to be noted. The title implies a short journey which is after all what you expect from a piece of music, even the most static.
