"Chassés-croisés" are duets written for friendly instrumentalists, in this case two childhood friends who have come together to form the Idylle Duo.
In the extreme registers of the wind quintet, these two instruments nevertheless share a range of one tenth. Their attacks and timbres in ordinary playing are quite different, but it is possible to bring them together, to play on both contrasts and fusions. The two instruments each represent a character, with their own features and characteristics. The rhythmic character is emphasised in a spirit of play, of jubilation at times
