Exactly to what, and to whom are we contemporary? Is it the Louis Couperin prelude that I play here, or one of the recently-composed pieces that you are discovering for the first time today? The Jean de Joyeuse organ at the cathedral of Sainte-Marie d'Auch is a repository for all man's forgotten sounds, and in restoring these sounds it creates a present which is no longer with us. It is more, however, than a simple witness to the past, for it is enriched with all we have been and stimulates our memory, revealing all we have become through its worlds of sound.
