23/01/2021 - Paris, Philharmonie - Trio KDM, Elise Chauvin, Alain Billard, Tanguy Viel

Between 2012 and 2014 I had the opportunity to work with writer Tanguy Viel on the opera commissioned by the Théâtre du Capitole, Les Pigeons d'argile. Since then, we have maintained a very strong intellectual, artistic and amicable relationship. This led us to the idea of working together again, but on a totally different project. This time, we concentrated on seven "musical settings" - like miniatures or paintings - each associated with a major city that had left its mark on Tanguy Viel. The texts he wrote, seven poems, refer to Chinese Santori, in the quasi-spiritual sense of amazement that these cities provoked in him. After Tanguy returned from a long trip around the world, a journey made largely by freighter, it was the strong impressions of the cities he encountered that he chose to share with us.
The music was written for an ensemble comprised of the Trio K/D/M - an accordionist and two percussionists - and the virtuoso clarinetist Alain Billard, to which the soprano and actress Elise Chauvin added her voice. Concerning the use of the voice, we dissociated ourselves completely from what we had done for the opera. In this case, the voice utters the texts without really speaking or singing, an in-between style not at all related to Sprechgesang, but rather the result of work done with Elise Chauvin based on a limited set of sounds and technical modes that we developed with regards to the text.
The piece, lasting approximately 30 minutes, is thus both a sort of travel log as well as an expression of the "spiritual awakening" incited by the places that Tanguy Viel visited.

Philippe Hurel

Tanguy viel adds:
The poems that make up Périple grew out of an emotion, that which sometimes occurs unexpectedly in the heart of large cities, taking on the character of rapture: there in the space of an instant, the surging perceptions gather into an emotive synthesis that overcomes sensation. The poem thus becomes the confirmation, or rather the vestige. From capitol to capitol, from Shanghai to London, it is this particular experience known to the Japanese as "satori", that these texts attempt to define and render. May they in turn give rise to the intensity of the experience hidden within them.
