Voix dans un vaisseau d'airain, Chant en escalier (1977) is characteristic of Michaël Levinas' first inspiration: instead of a coalescent symphony of sounds, an inseparable sound-space continuum of which the composer bends the twists and turns. The work is a trio - for voice, flute and horn - of which' the sounds invade a piano case, making the strings sound in sympathy. Mingled with a pre-recorded piano, the resulting sonority is mixed and sent out into the hall. The technique used in Italian-built theaters is an allegorical allusion to the sonorous space in which this work evolves, of which the piano case is the efficient manifestation. Besides, this score well deserves the second part of its title: musical - the performers ascend harmonic steps - and real - a narrative brings out the "screams of a woman who climbs a staircase before falling to the bottom of the stairwell at the end of each period".
