The Holocaust Memorial in Berlin: resolute, alignments of cement blocks, all similar, all different, forming an immense quadrilateral, offering thousands of perspectives. My piece merely tries to evoke this monument so moving in its simplicity: the allegory of an allegory. The chord filaments, emerging from silence, returning to silence, form straight lines, become superimposed, overlap, crisscross - to the point that one could sometimes have the impression of hearing several pianists...
Born in Le Havre in 1947, Tristan Murail received advanced degrees in classical and North African Arabic from the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, as well as a degree in economic science, while at the same time pursuing his musical studies.
