FOCCROULLE Bernard

Bernard Foccroulle was born in Liège in 1953. He embarked on an international career as an organist in the mid 1970s, performing a vast repertoire stretching from the Renaissance to the contemporary era. He gave dozens of world premiere performances of composers such as Philippe Boesmans, Brian Ferneyhough, Betsy Jolas, Xavier Darasse, Jonathan Harvey and Pascal Dusapin.
His solo discography includes some forty CD recordings. He has in particular recorded the complete organ works by J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude and Matthias Weckmann for Ricercar, carefully choosing the most beautiful historic instruments still in existence. His recordings have received numerous awards.
He directed the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie between 1992 and 2007, and since 2007, is director of the Festival d'Art Lyrique in Aix-en-Provence.
From 1976 to 1990, he taught analysis at the Liège Conservatory, and starting in 2010, became professor of organ at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels.
Over the past several years, he has done more multidisciplinary projects associating the organ with dance (choreographed by Jan Fabre and Salvador Sanchis) or video (premiere with Lynette Wallworth in 2014).
He wrote a cycle of compositions for historic organs. Several works are intended for the voice: Am Rande der Nacht for soprano and orchestra on poems by Rilke, Due for baritone and instrumental ensemble on texts by De Luca, or Quatre Mélodies d'après Verlaine for soprano and piano.
He was named doctor honoris causa by the University of Montreal.
