In December 1916, a limited edition was published for one thousand subscribers: "Pages inédites sur la Femme et la Guerre" dedicated to Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII.
Of the musicians solicited, only Saint Saëns and Debussy responded to the offer.
Claude Debussy sent two manuscript pages entitled "Elégie" to the publisher Devambez, which would be his last solo piano work. These 21 measures are the actual description of Debussy's distress, the summarization of his physical and mental suffering.
