Dominique Lemaître's artistry defies description, and one can indeed recognize its intent to be identified beyond any formalized setting, to create a poetic universe where the listener's subjective and objective consciousnesses are both addressed. That is the source for its colors, different progressions of timbre on a single note, ambiguity, finely detailed harmony and sound.
De la Nuit is clearly in phase with this way of thinking. From the very outset, the saxophone suggests a noctural, meditative color, while the piano opens out the field of sound. Ever widening intervals played by the piano are further enhanced by the saxophones gestures which are, in a way, organic sound extensions. Those resonances give birth to the two instruments' intermingled melismae, and the music returns to itself more calmly now, vanishing once and for all.
