Since LOOPS I, was originally written for flute, I had the intention of limiting the electric guitar to become a some sort of a monophonic instrument. To support this idea, a rich presentation of fingerings is given in the score, clearly associating a note with one (often repeating) concrete string.

After a note gets its fingering, it is important to follow that fingering as long as possible or until a different option is suggested. It is of course possible to use different fingerings than written but following the conception of a monophonic instrument” will be highly helpful in bringing clarity and flow to the processing of musical material that is so evident in the LOOPS composition series.

The dynamics should be performed with much care and with the thought of not overusing the volume pedal in a way that the dynamic changes sound unnatural. I as well use a pedal to control the amount of distortion and this often corresponds to the notated dynamics.

In Movement II (bars 98-108) and Movement III (bars 110-128 & bar 148) the pp notes are dampened (use light palm muting) while the ƒ and accented notes should be played with a clear and sharp articulation. As for the guitar sound, it should be quite distorted but not in a way that will cause the notes to sound blurry.

Loops I is an energetic piece and should be played in that manner and spirit.
