Born in 1955

Biography

Philippe Hurel was born in 1955 in Domfront, and studied musicology at the University of Toulouse before entering the Paris Conservatory. He then took part in musical research at Ircam in 1985-86 and again in 1988-89. From 1986 to 1988 he was a resident at the Villa Médicis, home of the Académie de France in Rome. In 1995 he was awarded the Siemens Foundation Prize in Munich for his work Six Miniatures en Trompe-l'oeil. He taught the music and computers course at Ircam from 1997 to 2001 and was then invited as composer-in-residence in 2001 and 2002, at the Arsenal in Metz with the Philharmonie de Lorraine. Since 1991 Philippe Hurel has been artistic director of the Ensemble Court-Circuit, conducted by Pierre-André Valade. He received the SACEM Composers' Prize in 2002 as well as their prize for best new work in 2003 for Aura. He has been an associate professor at McGill University (Montreal) since 2004. His works have been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras conducted by such eminent figures as Pierre Boulez, Esa-Pekka Salonen, David Robertson, Jonathan Nott, Reinbert de Leeuw, Bernard Kontarsky, Stefan Asbury, Kent Nagano, Peter Eötvös, Markus Stenz, Ed Spanjaard... and, of course, Pierre-André Valade with whom he works regularly.
Guest of the first Duophonies, original festival with contemporary composers and artists from various sound world.
Loops and Tributes is a piece which combine contemporary music and jazz improvisations (percussions).
Performances at La Maroquinerie (Paris), January 23th 2006 and at Théatre de La Criée (Marseille), February 5th 2006.
HORS-JEU work for percussion and electronic have been created by Daniel Ciampolini at the Festivel Agora of Ircam, on 10th June 2006.
